Peter Saville

Peter Saville designed the Factory Records logo to look like a clean, industrial warning sign. He wanted it to be simple and modern, using an idealised corporate style influenced by Bauhaus design, which stood out against the typical messy punk aesthetic.

Peter Saville was in his early twenties when he co-founded Factory Records and created its stark, industrial logo. He is arguably best known for the iconic album artwork he designed for Joy Division’s Unknown Pleasures and New Order’s Blue Monday. Saville enjoyed total creative freedom at the label, using a sophisticated, modernist style inspired by Bauhaus design. Beyond music, he became a sought-after creative director for high fashion brands and eventually the City of Manchester.
