Critical Link

Factory Records was created by Tony Wilson and Alan Erasmus in 1978. It featured bands/artists such as Joy Division, Happy Mondays, New Order, Northside and James.

Factory Records started in 1978 in Manchester. It was founded by TV host Tony Wilson and his friend Alan Erasmus after they ran successful local music nights.

The label had a very unusual business style. Instead of formal contracts, they let artists have total creative freedom. Projects were a team effort, guided by a focus on unique design by Peter Saville. Everything the label did, even a poster or a lawsuit, got a special ID number. This relaxed, non-business approach allowed for great music but meant projects often cost too much and didn't have standard legal protections, which eventually led to the label's closure.
